Getting to the trailhead: N. Mt. Elbert Trail (Halfmoon Creek). Complete trip report on mount Elbert at: http://www.elemenja.com/words/trip_report_elbert and more details on the trailhead.
Elbert is the highest peak in Colorado and in the Rocky Mountains at 14,433 feet and second highest in the continental United States (Whitney in California is the highest in the lower 48)
The route starts at the Guanella Pass Trailhead (11,670) above the town of Georgetown. I used US 285 and the Guanella Pass Road from Grant vice I-70 and the road from Georgetown. I recommend using the US 285 approach for winter ascents to avoid some of the ice on the road. Started 07:20 11 December. 2:17 to ascend including picture stop halfway up. Snow consolidated on ascent. Used snowshoes for the majority of the return trip.
Shavano is the easternmost 14 er in the Sawatch range. It is most noted for the Angel of Shavano on its east face. In spring and early summer the snow filled gullies resemble and angel with upstreched wings.
Mount Massive is 14,421' and part of the Sawatch range.
