The race begins with 400' vertical climb to the alpine section So Mike decides that it would be fun to do a race that starts off with a run up a black diamond rated ski slope at Steamboat Ski Resort. “Go for it,” I say, because I know that I’ll be the one chillin’ out and taking pictures in the transition area. Jake and I enjoy the sunny day and the excitement of the Junior Olympic Ski Jump competition happening on the hill adjacent to the pentathlon course, and are there to yell encouragement to our speed-racer as he transitions from telemark skis to snowshoes to cross-country skis to mountain bike to running shoes again…a twisted sort of “circle of life” race! “Was it fun for you?” he asks as we load armfuls of gear into the truck. Silly question…doesn’t he know yet that it’s always fun for me?
