| | Trail Running, mountain biking and canoe/kayaking | Trail running: Excellent training for trail running on the 17 mile Bull Run-Occoquan Trail where the Bull Run Run 50 mile trail race is conducted each Spring (Bull Run Run-BRR race site). Late fall is my preferred season when the leaves have fallen and have had a couple rains and foot traffic to remove the hazard factor of hiding rocks, roots and ruts.
Mountain biking: Single track is available at the mountain bike course. Call for trail conditions: 703-250-9124 (trail is closed after heavy rains). The course has some fairly technical spots with roots, rocks, ravines and rolling hills.
Distance: 6.00 mile loop with some additional mileage added in a recent loop
Canoe and kayak: Occoquan Reservoir offers canoes for rentals, but you will have to bring your own kayak. The shape and length of the Occoquan Reservoir has made it the location of several area crew teams that compete during the fall school year.
Brick and adventure racing: This is a great location to train for adventure races and is a prominent section of the Venture Quest (VQ) adventure race.
Getting there: From I-95 exit 163 in Lorton, go west to Route 123, Ox Road (straight on Lorton Road and then Furance Road). Continue on route 123 west to Hampton Road, route 647. Turning left on Hampton Road and following it to Fountainhead Regional Park.
From I-66, exit in or around Vienna and find your way to Ox Road, take that south past Burke Lake Park and turn right when you reach Hampton Road then follow directions as above.
